Ace famously said that a 100-watt head sounded good with the controls at “5.” That is useful historical evidence, not a universal preset. Frehley’s three-pickup Les Pauls became inseparable from the Spaceman image. In 1979 he said he had started using three pickups for tonal variety and appearance. He also reported installing DiMarzio pickups in his Gibsons and specifically expressed enthusiasm for the Super Distortion.

The modern DP100 Super Distortion is described by DiMarzio as a high-output ceramic humbucker designed to push a tube amplifier into overdrive. That makes it a logical reference for a late-1970s Ace-inspired stage sound: strong output, a forceful midrange and enough drive to make an amplifier compress. It does not prove that every historic recording used that pickup, nor that the current production model is identical to every unit Ace owned.

A conventional two-humbucker Les Paul, SG or similar guitar can cover the fundamental job if its bridge pickup has clarity, sufficient output and a volume control that cleans up predictably.

Pickup height can be as consequential as the model name. If the pickup is too close to the strings, the result may become congested or overly aggressive. If it is too low, the amp may feel less immediate. Adjust in small steps, compare chords with single-note lines and stop when the wound strings remain defined while bends on the plain strings still feel full.

Effects were colors, not the entire picture

The period evidence does not support treating Ace’s base sound as a large, always-on effects chain. In 1979 he discussed using an Echoplex and a Mu-Tron octave divider on only a few songs. The Echoplex could add repeats and spatial depth, while an octave divider supplied an obvious special effect. Their selective use reinforces the idea that the central voice came from guitar, pickup, amplifier and hands.

A later touring-rig account described a wireless system, tuner, EP Booster, Line 6 DL4 delay, a 100-watt Marshall JCM2000 and a Marshall 1960AV cabinet loaded with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. It likewise characterized delay as something used selectively rather than continuously. That later system helps explain how Ace maintained a familiar identity with newer equipment, but it should not be projected backward onto the 1970s albums.

For a modern approximation, begin dry. Add a short, quiet delay only after the core sound works. The repeats should sit behind the original note rather than blur a bend or turn a compact lick into a wash. Reserve octave effects for passages where the artificial texture is the point.

Ace distinguished vintage studio instruments from his regular stage guitars in the period, and he later identified a 1959 Les Paul as one of the guitars used on that record. That supports a broader studio palette, although it does not assign a particular guitar to every song.

The album’s tones range from firm riff crunch to singing leads and more produced textures. “Rip It Out” rewards a tight pick attack, while the lead work across the record shows how Ace could make a short motif memorable through timing and articulation. The equipment creates the voice; the arrangement decides when that voice enters and leaves.

Later solo and touring rigs: refinement without losing the outline

Later rigs incorporated contemporary switching, delay and amplification, yet the recognizable outline remained bridge humbucker, Marshall-family drive and selective ambience.
